EXCELLENT User Rating

First published in 1987, Backtrack has established itself as a reputable periodical dedicated to the history of British railways. Initially released quarterly and subsequently bi-monthly, the publication shifted to a monthly issue in 1995, reflecting its sustained growth and the recognition of a dedicated readership interested in high-quality railway history scholarship.

Backtrack’s scope encompasses all facets of railway history across Britain and Ireland, ranging from the inception of horse-drawn tramroads to approximately ten years prior to the present day. While the journal prominently features articles on locomotives—be they steam, diesel, or electric—and rolling stock, it also explores the histories of individual railway lines. Additionally, it addresses social, political, financial, engineering, and labour-related aspects that have shaped railway development. Regular topics include stations, bridges, signalling systems, biographical profiles, train service histories, and staff recollections.

A notable characteristic of Backtrack is its strong visual content. Each issue combines archival black-and-white photographs with carefully curated historical color images that capture various scenes from railway history, all reproduced with a commitment to high standards of quality.

The publication is available as a free application download. Users can purchase current and back issues directly within the app. Subscription options are also offered, beginning from the latest issue at the time of subscription. Subscriptions are automatically renewed unless canceled more than 24 hours prior to the renewal date. Renewal charges occur within 24 hours before the current subscription period ends and are at the prevailing rate for the selected subscription plan. Users have the option to disable auto-renewal through their account settings but cannot stop an active subscription during its current term.

Payment for subscriptions is processed via your device’s account (e.g., iTunes), with any free trial periods forfeiting unused time upon subscription purchase. If a free trial is offered, cancellation must occur at least 24 hours before trial expiration to avoid charges.

Account registration or login within the app allows users to safeguard their purchased issues in case of device loss and enables access across multiple platforms. Existing Pocketmags users can retrieve previous purchases by logging into their accounts.

For optimal experience during initial use, it is recommended to load the app over a Wi-Fi connection to ensure all issues are downloaded successfully. Should the app fail to progress beyond the splash screen after installation or update, reinstallation from the App Store is advised.

Help and frequently asked questions are accessible both within the app and on the Pocketmags website. For assistance with any issues, users are encouraged to contact [email protected].
